In This Moment: If you have kids, Please Read This
I'm not a Kenny Chesney fan. However, a fan or not, please listen to the first song on the playlist. The whole song....
How do I describe why this song resonates? I didn't have a teen pregnancy. I didn't lose my future hopes and dreams because I got pregnant.
However, I sure wasn't ready for the changes a child brought into my life.
How do I explain that to Finn when he gets older? His mama wasn't a natural mama! Some men and women are, bless their souls! They were just born to have kids and raise them with a smile. Amy Carlson comes to mind. And, of course, Kelle Hampton, who always writes about her childhood dreams of being a mommy!
That just was not me. Finn came into this world quickly, born into Grandma Rooke's arms, on our shower curtain covered bed, with dental floss tying the cord. But, it wasn't just the delivery that was quick. He was born before our first wedding anniversary.
We wouldn't change a thing, having our kids as quickly as we did, but we had to do a lot of growing up and a lot of growing together through the stress of pregnancy and babies. As our kids grow, I didn't realize how much pain is also tied up so perfectly with the love we have for them. They don't realize the many sacrifices made for them. The baby that just won't sleep, but when in your arms, looks like this....
I'm not writing this because one day, I hope our kids realize the sacrifices we've made for them. It is for my own soul and how much I understand what this song is saying. I'm changing so much through this time of raising children. There have been many bumpy days. I had a lot of anger and frustration. I felt like I had nothing more to give either Camlon or the kids. Yet, I still had to wake up and get out of bed another morning and.....Love them. And how much Camlon felt this same way.
As time passes, that pain turns into something unexplainable. And, I like how in the song, He can sing the exact same words, but the meaning is completely different. First, it was of loss and sadness. Then, it is of love and fulfillment.
"There goes my life. There goes my future, my everything. I love you."

Though the road is not easy, I'm thankful for all the things my children are teaching me.
We had two visitors to our home this past week. One was Grandma Barb! We've been looking forward to her visit for quite a long time!
I will not forgive myself for two things:
1. I didn't get her to the beach! (Hello!)
2. I didn't take any pictures with her. :(
But, we did make it to Balboa Park.
Instead of getting in a picture with her, I put her next to some crazy acrobat sculpture. Hmmmmmm........
The coolest artists ever are the ones that create things kids can play on and not just look at!
The kids played here for 45 minutes, maybe even an hour.
Then, we had a surprise visitor come into town. I kept it a surprise from Cam. My mom graciously shared her time with us, so we could have dinner with our friend as well! It was so great seeing you again, J!
We sure threw you right in with the kids, and you wore them out quickly! Maybe you are gonna be one of those natural Mamas!

After a long, hard week of defending our country, you will find Camlon here......Bright and early!
Nothing reduces stress like a little game of soccer. His teammates are mostly Iranian, yelling at each other and Cam in Persian! He loves it!
We enjoyed our time at the park as well. And at one point, all children were occupied and I stole a few glances toward the game!
Things around the house..... Eric loves to read on Phin's bed and I often find him here. Phin is starting to leave messages on the fridge for others to read!
As Sheryl Crow sings to me even now as I'm typing....Yes, a change will do me good. I'm in the process of conquering my inner disorganization. With all our moves, I've been forced to organize many important facets of our home life, bills and taxes. However, I do need to continue the process. As much as I'd rather be reading something a little more heartwarming, I'm currently on chapter 7 of:
The book starts off with the typical survey. You know....Let's see just how disorganized you really are. I found myself checking off almost all of them. But, when I read the one, "Have you missed appointments..." I patted myself on the back. I'm not a complete loser! I really don't miss appointments or meet-ups with friends.
*sigh*
Well, as you can gather by picture number 2 above, just the day after I filled out my survey, I completely forgot about a little girl's birthday party. I was so excited to take Eric there and get to know my neighbor more! I felt awful. My apologies were graciously received. Yet, I went back to "update" my survey! And, the change is continuing on.........
I love a husband that asks for a "Honey, Do....." List. My clothesline is the current project. And boy, does he have a lot of helpers. Even some that bring refreshments!

We are crossing as much off the list as possibly before the big D-Day! (Deployment) Luckily, that big day isn't soon!

Everlater.com Wanne-Be-Traveler ~ La Jolla
I may not be hitting up Guam or Africa any time soon. I may not be traveling across Central America via donkey.....But, I do travel in my own little way.
We plan what roads to take. Prepare lunches. Talk about our upcoming adventure non-stop until it finally arrives! The excitement builds until it feels like we are, honestly, going to the moon. Today we got to travel.
Our destination......
That's right! It was an amazing....
On our beach days, I always know I'm getting close to the shore because all the streets start to look like this.
The beach we explored today is probably the most popular beach in the area. During Summertime, you will never ever catch me setting foot here, unless it is for the sunrise! Crowded beaches with small children running everywhere.....I don't think so.
However, today, with the temps back in the 90s, it felt just like a summer day to us.
A Swing with a View:
High noon isn't exactly the best time to be snapping pictures. Plus, bringing my camera to the beach is always risky. But, today, I just had to bring the camera! And I'm glad I did.
We are not fancy beach people. You know the ones I'm talking about. Umbrellas, chairs, tents for the babies to sleep in, ipod, books, etc, etc. All those things are great and I would love to party down with a great beach set up, but at the moment, hauling 3 little ones feels like I already am loaded down with the whole circus tent, ya know. I did invest in a cooler though!
And Eric steals other people's chairs the minute they vacate them. Our friend let him stay for awhile in her chair!
The seagulls are fierce, but luckily the kiddos love to pretend they are little ninjas and they chase them away endlessly. Which is good because those birds always come back.
Eric has been exploring his bondaries lately.
Hence, I'm glad we weren't here in the middle of a summertime crowd. I let him roam a bit today.
Mudpies were made.
And Eric left his fingerprints.
Little slice of heaven today.
Our little teeny, tiny, trip to the beach has been recorded on Everlater.com. Maybe the trip posted right after mine will be some amazing trekker that just summited Everest! :) I'm such a travel-wanne-be!!!!
Although, I like scaling it down a bit, because I always remind myself how much there is to enjoy in the mundane. Hopefully, my next trip on everlater won't be a trip to the grocery store. Unless, it is to mark a coupon savings like that lady in the last video I posted. THAT may be worth a trip diary entry! ....well, maybe.
My perspective on life seems to have changed!

Nature: Parks and Home...and Sea
I'll cover Home first......We have our own routines around here. Upon waking we immediately dive into bowls of cold cereal and crunch away. Then, we do some morning chores, an hour or so of school and then, it is playtime. Once playtime commences, the house will turn into this....
and this.....in a matter of 15 minutes.
Which is why I stand amazed at the ability of my kids this day, because they completed this puzzle.
We have not had all the circles to that balloon puzzle since New Jersey. And I'm talking New Jersey 2006, when JoEllen first gave us this lovely puzzle. I stood there and honestly had no idea how all the pieces suddenly came together here in California! After what, 5 moves or partial moves......we now suddenly rediscover the lost yellow balloon. Or was it the light blue? You know, for a while there, I believe we only had the red, purple and green to work with.
A lot goes on around this house.

Discovering new very generous neighbors willing to pass on their older kids old toys!! A new fort!
Eric loves to run cars along this city street mat.
We LOVE to listen to this birthday card song over and over...Plus, I love to gloat over (well, drool really) over this chair I got on craigslist for.....(drumroll) F.R.E.E.
We paint. A LOT.
Most of the time, I praise and praise all their amazing works and then, later, when they aren't looking or most likely asleep, I do sneak them into the garbage. It's like the anti-tooth fairy. It's the painting stealing fairy. I'll blame it on that but, then I'll add that the fairy is really a good fairy because she only steals quality work. Stuff bound for museums 100 years from now. It is all in a "safe place."
......Am I a terrible mother??
Finn is getting really creative. This picture above is actually my favorite picture he has ever done. Can you see the ship? I want to hang it up in the house. Or, Maybe, we will hang it in the garage next to where Cam hung his and Eric Terhune's flags (Canada and US). I can see it now.... Yes. Cam does need artwork to look at while he putters in there. Men just get sentimental in their garages.
We carry on in quite a casual way as one usually does around his/her own house. Currently, Eric loves to wear only one shoe when relaxing at home. We don't know why, but his awkward shuffling is quite amusing to watch.
Life at Home looks a little different when Camlon is at sea. One marked difference would be, this could be all we have for dinner......
Meat consumption almost goes completely out the window.
But, whether he is home or at sea, we still eat all our meals the same way....Like it is our first meal after a trek across the Sahara. It is devoured!
Don't be fooled by the demure expression. She burps the loudest!
We also love to video chat. LOVE IT! (sorry, photo is blurry)

With Halloween behind us, we are stepping into the brisk month of November with our low temps around 50 degrees and our highs around 80. So, as much as we love life and home, we love to get out and play.
Is this tree right out of Middle Earth or what??
One local park has a kiddie train.
Oops! Not that one. This one...
Here's the depot:
We even saw a shootout on our last bend back toward the depot.
Love it! You know they are all volunteers having fun on a Saturday afternoon!
Now, that park is fun, but we all have another favorite!
This one has many cool features. Mountains, an almost 360 view, several jungle gyms. I'm not a fan of jungle gyms currently. Eric runs up the steps of the ones designed for 12-year-olds, stumbling and nearly falling over the sides the whole way up. And when I race to put my hands up to make sure he doesn't fall, he gives me a high five, spits at me and continues on faster. When he toddles around the upper perimeter, past each wide opening......(I try to stay calm but ready to swoop), he finally makes his way to the slides where I must be stationed at the ready, because his shoes get caught at the top and catapult him out into my arms where I then, place him back at the middle of the slide so he can enjoy the rest of the ride. At the bottom, he giggles proudly and runs back for the steps......
That being said, I still love this park. One morning, there were so many cool things going on, I just got giddy. A pick-up soccer game of at least 30 older men. Cam can't wait to join in. A family playing basketball. A dog training class. A Bible study. Three birthday parties. Little kids on bikes. Runners. Walkers.... And the clouds were so low, I was tempted to reach out and grab some to stuff in my mouth like cotton candy.
We brought the kids here for their first bike rides ever!!! They were excited! One of the bike paths circles the open green area, but it is on the mountain top so the view all the way around it is beautiful. A couple days ago we were here at sunset and my friend and I realized you can see the ocean from the playgrounds. The water was reflecting the setting sun.

This day we could hear the middle or high school marching band practice.
Eric's other favorite part of the park besides the jungle gym is this what-cha-ma-call-it.
To close, I will share a few pictures from our last evening with Cam on his ship.
We brought Subway for dinner.
We visited his room.

The kids thought it was just a cool clubhouse!
Finn practices his salute. He pokes himself in the eye.
We didn't know how long he would be gone, so we all got pictures with him before heading home for the evening. It was Cam's duty day that day which means he spends the full day on board ship. We've got to be protected at all times.

I got a great surprise this week though, when Camlon came home unexpectedly!!! I was reading to the kids in our bedroom when my phone rang. I threw the kids off me because I knew it was Cam. It was!!! We talked and I went back to the bedroom so the kids could say hi. Then, Cam said, "Hey Finn, tell mommy she's looks great in that pink shirt." Ah!!! I knew it. He was home, standing right outside our window ~ Locked out!!! Thankfully, he did that in such a way that I didn't freak out! Right before he said that to Finn, I could hear an echo, so I thought he might be outside! Great surprise though. We were all glad to have him home!
What adventures await us tomorrow??

With this hot weather, I'm not really able to shift into the whole holiday gear....but I am trying to work on a cool mini recipe book that includes stories from other moms. I've got some great recipes too, from marinades and pizza dough to gluten free baking...Amazing stuff thanks to Jodi, Christy and Melanie and a few others! Let me know if you'd be interested in a copy. I'm working on it in blog format and when I'm done, I may just make the site public.
And I know we have all seen Slumdog except for poor Jorie and myself, but I also feel like I was the last one in on Couponmom!!! Whoever failed to pass that wonderful tidbit on to me can kiss....well, hmmmm. Sorry, I meant to say, I just discovered couponmom on youtube yesterday and fell in love. It's free people!!! Oh wait......everyone knows!!!! Awww well, preaching to the choir, right!?? Sometimes, I wonder how many Sunday papers some of those crazy coupon clippers get....

Whoever failed to pass that wonderful tidbit on to me can kiss....well, hmmmm. Sorry, I meant to say, I just discovered couponmom on youtube yesterday and fell in love. It's free people!!! Oh wait......everyone knows!!!! Awww well, preaching to the choir, right!?? Sometimes, I wonder how many Sunday papers some of those crazy coupon clippers get....
