LIFT 7 Part 1 Sept. 10, 2001

Our first day together was September 10, 2001. A dozen or so of us came to Camp-of-the-Woods......

We were mostly from the East Coast:
Buffalo, NY
New York, New York
Speculator, NY (a local!)
Kinnelon, NJ
Iowa
Kentucky
Virginia
Georgia
Florida

We were from very different places in life:
Photobucket
A Marine transitioning from enlisted to officer
I came there completely blindsided by my parent's recent decision to divorce
Many took a semester off from college to come or had just graduated
One was just out of jail.

We all had one thing in common though.......We wanted the opportunity to step outside of the every day grind and really ask the hard questions about our faith in God. What does the Bible really say about who God is? Where do we stand on these things. Some were raised going to church. Some had rebelled and recently made a dramatic turn around. Some had just begun to even consider God's existence. One day, one of them had sat down on the steps of their dorm and said, "I do believe what Jesus says about forgiving sins. Now, where do I go from here?"
Photobucket

We were the 7th group to begin the LIFT program. It was a three month semester that incorporated classroom time, weekly hikes, community service and just time. We had time away from TV, phones, friends, family. We had time to just hang out. We discussed things, cooked meals for each other, watched movies together, and we even had a couple 3 day hikes. Nate Winters led the group.
Photobucket

This particular fall, our group took a turn that would forever bond us.
Photobucket

I know not all groups felt this way. Many groups did bond. Ours did because on our second day, September, 11, 2001, we hiked Whiteface mountain.
Photobucket

At the top, we sat down to enjoy a gorgeous view of Lake Placid as Nate read a verse to us from Isaiah.
Photobucket

"Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed," says the LORD, who has compassion on you."
Isaiah 54:10

Quite a fitting verse since none of us had heard the news of the terrorist attacks yet.
As we descended the mountain, Camlon and Eric were already at the van with it warmed up and ready for us to make the two hour drive home. They had the radio on and we all listened to the President address the Nation that evening.  I certainly remember him reading from Psalm 23 while I was stuck in the back row of a 15 passenger van, crammed between the other LIFTers I had just met. My cousin Dave worked at the Trade Centers at the time. My family called and let me know he had called in sick that day. Lucky for him.

As we waited in line at a McDonald's in Lake Placid that night, watching footage of people jumping from the buildings, our spiritual exploration together had truly begun. As did that of the whole Nation with church attendance through the roof!

In the first couple weeks, we took a 5 day cruise through the Northville/Lake Placid trail.

The girls got to sleep in the lean-tos and the guys camped out in tents.

I'm posting a lot of pictures here instead of doing collages, so if people want to take them, they can have the whole image alone.
Photobucket

Camlon had prepared dinner for us.

Camlon learned to knit...

Eric failed at making a hammock....

This little girl stole Cam's heart....She still has a part of it, I'm convinced!

Who would have thought??? During LIFT, certainly not I! Cascade Mtn was really windy!

If 9/11 changed you...........

******Stop music at the bottom of the page before watching the trailer. A friend and sister-in-Christ from college died on September 11th. She was on a plane, flying out of Boston to LA. I just listened to a recording of a flight attendant from that flight in the moments before the plane struck one of the twin towers.

I remember Nate Winters, upon hearing of Todd Beamer and the other heros of flight 93, telling us of the amazing people Todd and Lisa were, even back during their days at Wheaton.

Living in North Jersey, those neighbors we had were all personally affected by 9/11. Some were widows. I just saw this trailer today and thought........that is what I would do if I had lost Camlon. Or, at least that is what I would want to do.

It's not the kind of movie typically watched during a girls' night in, but it isn't a movie I want to watch alone either. But, I can't wait to see it. Has anyone seen this? The trailer was posted on YouTube in 2007, so I realize many of you may have already seen it. Please give me your feedback.

Trailer to the film: Beyond Belief

The Orchard

****disclaimer*****I don't mean to post these to make my poor SIL down south more envious of our weather, but I did want to get the kids out for an evening stroll, before the rains come this weekend.

We walked off the beaten path to a very mysterious place.
Photobucket

There is this orchard near our house. Is it called an orchard when it is citrus fruit? I suppose not.... We were exploring this grapefruit "grove" near our house. I've heard it called a grove before......
Photobucket

Anyway, no one seems to harvest this fruit. It all just rolls down the hill and collects at the bottom of a fence near the road.
Photobucket

I didn't think anyone would mind if I stole a few shots there. We may be back for some fruit as well. I'm trying to get a few more neighbors in on that one though.....If we all just go together........it will be alright!
Photobucket

I got the kids dressed up, threw some mentos in my bag as a reward for catching smiles.....and we were off for our adventure.
Photobucket

Eric was pretty focused on the mentos! Photoshoot=candy. He can actually say the word, Candy. It's right up there with how often he says, "That way," another of his favorite phrases to tell me when I'm holding him. And, it is usually in the direction of more food.
Photobucket

a sneak peek at something to come.......my signature.
Photobucket

Can you believe I forgot to take off that crab sweatshirt!? He had on the cutest little pineapple shirt under it! But, I like the crab, too.
Photobucket

Finn is becoming quite the little photographer!

The kids love to wear this white hat of mine. They pretend they are Fievel from "American Tale"

Heading home for dinner......

I have a few more days left on my Lightroom free trial. Hoping to squeeze in a couple more shoots! :) Although, it is likely that a purchase will be made in the near future! Has anyone else tried the lightroom free trial from Adobe? It is very user friendly. If you do and you need a little help to figure things out, send an email to: fetephotography@yahoo.com. They walk you through at the beginning to show you how the program flows. But, you might have questions about some of the features to actually edit with. It is a lot like the Picasa program, though.

As I write this I believe another snowstorm is dusting the Midwest. Don't worry! Spring is coming soon! Plus, I really love this picture in my mind: My mom, curled up by her fireplace with a good book and some tea! Whenever that image pops into my head, I do long for another winter back in Iowa!

Breaking from the Cocoon

After what seems like forever, we finally broke out of the house today from our cocoon of sickness. It felt so good.
Photobucket

We've been reading the Berenstain Bears Picnic book lately.....I think we found a good spot.
Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

We sent some flower boats down the creek.
Photobucket

and put some in our hair...
Photobucket

At the park, we spun until we felt sick again! Here is Ally clutching her tummy.
Photobucket

I love when Eric wants my hand to hold.
Photobucket

Because, more and more, he wants to be on his own....and he is quick to discover his own adventures.
Photobucket

I love seeing healthy and playful kids again.
Photobucket
Tomorrow will be a busy day for us and I think we are up for the challenge!
